I am very happy because I was able to harvest my very first deer with archery hunting here in PA. I have been seeing several small bucks and several does but couldn't get anything to come within range.

I was hunting one of the more productive stands late one evening and had seen several doe in and out of the area. One doe in particular stayed around for a while eating in the area. It finally came within range and I was able to get an arrow in her.

At the advice of my dad, we decided to let her lay as it was almost 7:00pm and I wasn't sure I had made a good shot or not. I thought I had hit her alittle bit back from where I needed to hit her. So, the next day, we set out to find her. We located her about 60 yards from my stand. It was cold enough that night to leave her as to not spoil the meat. WOW!! I was so excited! I couldn't believe it.

Here is a picture of my doe. Check it out!

Best of luck on your next hunt,

Michelle

How Old Are These Bucks?

Here are some more photos from our deer cameras. Take a look. There are some nice eight point bucks out there that I am trying to harvest. It is now archery season in PA and I have been out a few times. I have seen up to 10 deer so far but nothing came close enough to me for me to get a shot. When I was exiting the woods and walking into the field. I saw a few deer already eating in the field. I stood and watched for a few minutes. I then decided to exit because it was dark and I walked out of the field and saw another deer to the north eating in the field. I took out my binoculars and to my amazement, it was a nice big rack. I assume it was and eight point but I couldn't be sure because it was dark, but I could see the nice tall rack and wide spread. I then looked to the woodline and noticed another deer coming out to eat. I used the binoculars and yet again, it was a buck. Not just a small buck, this was a bigger buck than the first one. Huge racks, nice spread! WOW! I would like to see that one in the daytime. Its getting exciting....I will let you know how it goes as the season goes on.

Nice eight point, right.

Best of luck on your next hunt,

http://www.howtoagedeer.com
http://www.howtoagedeerstore.com

Bucks Everywhere...I Can't Wait!

I was out checking the deer cameras tonight. We age deer so that we can tell how to better manage our deer population. Whether we are aging deer on the hoof (live deer) or we are using a deer aging tool (harvested deer), the main reason this should be done is to better your deer population down the road. We want to eliminate the deer that aren't producing the best antlers so that they do not pass on their genes to other future bucks.

Most bucks do not reach their best rack until they have reached maximum maturity. If we harvest these bucks before they are mature we will not be passing along those genes to create bigger and better bucks. That is why it is important to age deer on the hoof or live because we want to manage our deer population and pass along good genes for nice racks and eliminate the others.

You want to let those young bucks with good looking antlers walk by for another day so that they can pass along these genes to future births and let them mature a few years so they can reach their maximum antlers potential.

http://www.howtoagedeer.com
http://www.howtoagedeerstore.com
http://www.agingwhitetaildeer.com

Whitetail Bucks Keep Coming...Archery Season..Bring It On

Take a look at these bucks I just added. This is just not true. The only way to really age deer is by looking at their teeth. Now, you can do it the expensive way by removing the deer jaws and sending them into a company and paying them to send you back information on how old your deer really is, or you can do it yourself.

How can you do this yourself without costing you several hundreds of dollars?

You get the Deer Aging Tool.

What is a deer aging tool? With this tool, you can easily compare your whitetail deers teeth with the molds on the deer aging tool. By comparing these moldes to your deers teeth, you can easily determine the age of your deer. It is really that easy. The molds are from real whitetail deer taken at several age categories. You will see the 1 1/2 year old mold all the way up to the 3-5 year old molds.

As deer age, their teeth change with them. What a great time to be in the woods. I enjoy listening to the birds and all of natures creatures.

So, Saturday was here and my brother, dad, and me decided to hit the woods behind my house for some good old turkey action. The fact is that I have been seeing several gobblers strutting their stuff within the last few weeks and more importantly, I saw 3 gobblers just the day before on Friday.

So, we wake up at the crack of dawn, you know the 4:30am routine. (Well, my brother forgot to get up until my dad pulled in his driveway, but he made it). Off we got ot the woods set out to bring a gobbler home with us. We waited until the crows were talking and the owls were hooting. Wait...I hear a gobbler. We head off in that direction.

We start through the woods listening for that gobbler. We hear a couple of them now and then so we decide it was time to set up the decoys and take position.

We had two decoys we placed out for all the turkeys to see.

It wasn't five minutes and I see a hen and hear her putting as she walked closer and closer to me. That hen came within 10 yards of me. WOW!! Exciting. All the while I was watching intently behind her waiting for the gobbler to be training. Nothing I thought. Great.

I make a couple of calls and I hear my dad make a couple of calls now and then. We do have another gobbler in the area and it does seem to be getting closer and closer. I sit patiently awaiting it's arrival. It doesn't seem to be talking anymore and must have wondered off in a different direction.

We decide to pull of the decoys and take a look in the field. We make our way over to my dad and listen to him tell us how he saw a gobbler but couldn't see the beard on it because of the brush in front of him. He had that bead all set to fire on that gobblers red head but couldn't place the beard he needed to take the shot. Oh man! Well, we had several gobblers in the area but we just weren't able to pull the trigger. We will try again. I will be out a couple of times this week to try my luck at those sneaky fellows.

We did also see two deer that came into us. It was very cool because the one deer snorted several times at my brother trying to figure out what he was. It was a nice morning to be in the woods.

I'll keep you updated as turkey season presses on.

Best of luck on your next hunt,

http://www.howtoagedeer.com

http://www.howtoagedeerstore.com

Coyote's Were Out!

Hi everyone...

It's been a while since I've been able to get on my blog but now I am here and have a few fun things to report.

I have been very busy selling deer aging tools and guides for learning how to age deer on the hoof. You can see these items at www.howtoagedeer.com or www.howtoagedeerstore.com

I have been seeing alot of turkeys lately in the field. I have seen them around 8:00am in the morning out eating in the fields and around 7:00pm at night eating in the fields. Turkey season started here in Pa last Saturday. We were out and I will tell you all about that in my next post.

I wanted to let you know about the coyotes that I saw last Friday night. I was out last Friday evening doing my scouting for the start of turkey and I had 2 coyotes appear in the field I was sitting in.

How exciting it was... I haven't seen coyote's in the wild like that and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Amazing.

Here's the link for the coyote video...check it out at howtoagedeer.com coyote video

Best of luck on your next hunt.

www.howtoagedeer.com
www.howtoagedeerstore.com

New Doe Photos at Howtoagedeer.com

Hi Folks,

It's been a while since I have posted and I wanted to show you some of our recent doe photos we've received. We did have a small 4 point on the camera but I only loaded all of the doe. We have seen an increase in deer on one of the cameras where it is located near a lot of apple trees. I hope the 2 nice 8 points that I filmed in August made it, they are nice bucks and I haven't heard of anyone getting them but you never know.

I will keep you posted with any pictures as I get them.

Best of luck on your next hunt,

http://www.howtoagedeer.com

http://www.howtoagedeerstore.com

Rifle Season Is Over

Rifle Season here has just finished up and we will just have to wait for Muzzleloader which will be coming up shortly. My cousins wife was able to get a 7 point buck on the last Saturday of rifle. I haven't seen it yet, hopefully they send me a picture to post. I will be putting the scouting cameras back out to see what bucks made it through the season. This should be interesting.

I was contacted by the inventor of the 4 in 1 Scrapemaker this week and I am going to be field testing his product. This is an interesting product as it enables you to do alot of different things with just one tool. It is used to make mock scrapes and from all the testimonials on his page. I can see that alot of people really like it and used it with great success. I will also be adding it to my product line so look for it to be coming to my store shortly.

I will keep you posted about any pictures we get and also how the next season goes.

Here's a run down of the deer my family harvested.
Dad - doe
Mike - button buck
Mom - doe
Kathy - button buck
Me - button buck
Squale - Buck
T.J. - Buck and doe
Amy - Buck and doe

Not to bad for a couple of weeks.

One Happy Hunter,

http://www.howtoagedeer.com

http://www.howtoagedeerstore.com

One more chance...

Well, only a few more days left to harvest that big buck running around. We have Friday and Saturday left here in PA to get the buck. It has been cold here and snowing quite a bit so I know the deer should be moving to find food. I will be out and looking for those antlers in the woods.

A friend of the family harvested a really nice 10 point buck last Saturday. His name is Bruce. It has a nice spread about 21 1/2 inches I believe they said it was. There is suppose to be a few more bucks in that area that could be comparable to this one. I hope they are moving for me if I get over there to hunt.

The snow we received will be nice to track and see the deer when they are moving. It should help out alot. The temps here have been cold. We were at 12 degrees last night at one point when I checked. Pretty cold. Okay, I will keep you posted if we harvest anymore deer.

Check out this sale from Bass Pro
(sale good from 12/7 - 12/13)

Best of luck on your next hunt,

http://www.howtoagedeer.com

http://www.howtoagedeerstore.com

We cleaned house...I mean deer down.

The first Saturday of rifle season here in Pa came and went but not without a some gun fire. My family was back at it on Saturday in search of the deer. We went to a location that we have hunted for years and it was productive. We had deer moving bright and early, however, we couldn't quite get them in front of anyone. We decided to put on a drive and have my sister and brother-in-law push towards what we call "the big field". The started to push towards us and nothing was moving for us so we decided to set up on the big field and have them push the bottom of the field. We have done this so many times in the past, I can't even count..sometimes we get deer out of there and sometimes we don't. While my sister was making her way down the bottom, my dad indicated to my brother there are two deer heading his way. Right then, my brother and I are standing only about 30 yards away. So, I get ready. I look over and see Mike putting up his gun, then down it goes, then up. I was watching the entire time, but I was unable to see anything. Finally, he put his gun up and it stayed up. I heard a shot and then another shot. The whole time I am looking and trying to find the deer he is shooting at. Nothing. Then my dad says they headed out of there. My dad and brother went to see if he got anything. They looked and looked but nothing. So, he took his spot back on the big field. My sister is ready and they begin to push the bottom. On this day, I was hoping we did get some deer out of there. But, we didn't.

So, now we are all on the big field except my mom and brother-in-law. We then hear my mom say she just saw a spike. We wait a few minutes and hear a couple of shots down towards her location. We then hear her again on the radio saying, "It's down" She had just got her doe and it was down. Great!! One doe taken. We started to move towards my mom and help her. She then stated there were a couple more deer with the one she shot and they were moving the other way. My sister wants to move to her and then push towards us as we make our way to the cars for the morning. We set up and she begins her push. Then, a shot and my brother says deer are moving to the north. What, straight to me, yes. I am ready. I run towards the top of the field and I see one deer, two deer and they are running right up the edge of the corn field. Okay, they are gone. My brother makes his way to the deer to see if he did infact hit anything. He did and his doe was down...well, a button buck really.

Okay, my sister has her deer, my mom has hers, my brother has his. My dad got his doe in archery. My brother-in-law harvested his buck in archery. I am the only one left. What!!

My turn...we decide to go to another popular spot we have hunted for years to put on another drive for me. We set up and wait for everyone to start. As they are coming towards me, I hear a four wheeler. I believe it to be my cousin. As it gets closer, I hear lost of noise coming over the hill. Deer!! One, two. I take aim and they take off on a run. I pull my gun up and place the crosshairs for a shot. One shot and down. Nice. There were 5 other deer with this deer and I get the button buck. But..my deer is down. Finally, everyone has filled their tags.

Overall, we harvested 6 deer this season and my brother-in-law still has his doe tag left with a week to go. Well have to see if we can't get him a doe this week.

Until then,

Best of luck on your next hunt,

howtoagedeer.com
howtoagedeerstore.com

One Doe Harvested but Not By Me

Well, the opening day of rifle season has come and gone. The results, 1 doe harvested by my sister this afternoon. She was able to harvest this doe after my dad and her husband put the squeeze on this deer to give her a chance to get a shot. My brother, his daughter, and I started out the morning hunting behind my property. The problem was, the rain was really coming down and the deer were not moving. I believe that many hunters did not go out on the 1st day due to the weather. It rained all day and yes, my family and I were out there but I don't think everyone was as dedicated. So, we did harvest 1 doe and some of my family will be out there tomorrow, trying our luck again.

The good thing is the weather forecast is calling for rain changing to snow so, I think this will help the deer get moving.

I will post the results, hopefully, it will be something about a buck.

Good luck on your next hunt,

http://www.howtoagedeer.com

http://www.howtoagedeerstore.com

We're almost at opening rifle season in PA

This sounds crazy to me but we are almost at opening day for rifle season here in PA. I can't believe it is here already. It seems like just the other day I was talking about it last year and it is here again. Well, lets sum up the archery season. 2 bucks killed, one 7 point buck that we couldn't find, and one doe we couldn't find. I guess that's not bad for archery season. The drop tine buck was harvested so he's out for rifle season. I still believe there are some great looking bucks in the woods right behind my house that we may get a chance to see in rifle. Let's hope so.

I tried using the MAD Buck Growl call during archery and it didn't produce any results for me. I think that rut was late here in Pa and they weren't reacting to the call like they should have. I will continue to use it and test it as I do feel it is a good call. The primos doe in estrus can produced one doe that came running to me. It is a good call to have with you. My cousin also said he used it to get his 8 point buck this year. I do think it works.

I have been looking at a unique website lately that called http://www.bigbuckrattlingantlers.com They use a unique approach to rattling antlers as they talk about using 4 antlers instead of two. I have never really thought about this but it is true, there are 4 antlers involved in a fight and not two. I may just have to purchase one of those to see for myself how the antlers compare.

Best of luck on your next hunt,

http://www.howtoagedeer.com

http://www.howtoagedeerstore.com

Another Deer Aged Using the Deer Aging Tool

I just wanted to let you guys know how my last weekend archery hunting went. I sat thursday night and saw a doe but it didn't get close enough to me. Friday I got up and went in the woods with my climber. It was about 7:00am and I decided to try a primos doe in heat call. I turned that can three times and then heard and saw a deer come running towards me. I had just got the can put back in my pocket and it came a running. I quickly grabbed my bow off the holder and tried to position myself for a shot. I had to do a mouth bleat call to get this doe to stop so I could get a shot. I called and it stopped but unfortunetly, my arrow hit just below the doe. I missed short. I quickly grabbed another and tried to get off another shot as the deer was moving but it wasn't to be.

So, I decide to move my climber over near a fresh scrape I noticed on the way in to my stand. As I was moving my climber I set my bow down so I could carry it over to another tree and as I was at the my climber, I looked up and saw a deer. Yes a deer was heading my direction. The only problem was that I didn't have my bow. This doe came within 10 yards of me and the climber I was standing behind. WHAT LUCK!! I set my bow down and couldn't get to it to shoot this doe and it comes this close to me. I guess it wasn't to be. I moved my climber and sat for another hour and half and saw a nice tall 6 point buck come through. He will be nice next year, a little older and bigger rack for sure.

One last thing... My cousin T.J. harvested this nice buck, it was an 8 point with a 18 inch spread. Really nice looking rack. He aged it using the deer aging tool and aged it at 2 1/2 years old. Here's a picture of it. Check it out.

Best of luck on your next hunt

Droptine Buck Was Harvested

Well...It pains me to have to tell you that the droptine but has been harvested. And yes...it wasn't by me. I was visiting a local store the other day after hearing that a droptine buck was taken by someone in that area and asked the ladies at the store about it. They proceeded to tell me about it and that their nephew was the one that harvested the buck. It was a 13 point droptine buck. I asked about it out of curiosity and the lady explained to me that the rack was in the barn. She asked if I would like to see it and of course, how could I turn that down, I said sure. She walked to the barn and brought out the rack, wow! it was different that's for sure. The rack was still in velvet. It never lost the velvet. From the video I took of it this summer, my first thought was that this was not the buck I saw in the video because I thought for sure it was out of velvet on the video and also, it had a double-droptine on the one side, this buck did not. The only thing was, everything else was the same with the rack. From the little knobs on the one side to the height, etc. I then talked to my dad and he told me that he thought the drop tine had broke off the one point that would have made it the double-droptine. I could tell that this was probably the case after he mentioned it. So yes, the droptine buck had been harvested. It was quite a unique rack - definitely a little odd but I still would have like to get that buck myself. I did find out later that the buck was taken in the same square that I was hunting, so close...

Now, I would like to talk alittle bit about my brother-in-laws 7 point buck. We used our deer aging tool to age this but and you can read more about it in the previous post but I wanted to post some pictures that I took while we were aging his deer. So, here they are...I hope you can see how easy it is to age your deer, just simply match the molds to the deers teeth to get the age.

So, here are the two photos that I took of us aging the deer.

Best of luck on your next hunt,

New Buck Photos

Hi Folks,

I know it has been a few weeks since my last post but I had some computer trouble and didn't have access to the internet so...now I am back. I wanted to give you just a quick update about the bucks here in Pa and then show you some of the pictures we have been getting from our cameras.

Well, my brother-in-law got a nice looking 7 point. He was chewing one of our products the gum-o-flage when he had this 7 point walk with 25 yards of him for a good shot. I will pass along those photos as well. We used the Deer Aging tool to age him and he was only 1 1/2 years old. He probably would have been nice in a couple of years. He had a nice tall rack for only 1 1/2. I took some pictures of use aging this deer, I will post them in a few days. If you want to learn more about aging deer and using a deer aging tool check it out at http://www.howtoagedeer.com

This brings up the next topic of aging deer on the hoof. How many of you know how to age a deer when you see it while you are hunting. There are some key characteristics of deer that you want to look for to tell the age of them while in the field. To learn more about aging deer on the hoof, head on over to this link and you can check out our Field Guide to Aging and Scoring Whitetail Deer booklet. It gives you pictures and descriptions of what you want to be looking for when trying to age deer in the woods. Here's the link, go there now at http://www.howtoagedeer.com/agingandscoringdeer_store.html for more details.

So, back to another story. My dad did manage to get a doe with his crossbow and...I shot at a doe bright and early one morning about 7:30am but we couldn't find it. You would have thought with all the blood on the arrow and it bleeding pretty good we would have found it but no luck. We searched for about 2 1/2 hours and later searched again for 2 hours. It was a warm day so we need to find her that day or everything would be spoiled. Anyways, I haven't seen a deer since which means the last 7 times I have been out hunting, I haven't seen a deer.

Well, rut is finally closer. It should be soon this week, next week in fact. I can't wait. We have been getting some great buck photos and I am excited.

One product I have been using is called 24Seven Early Buck scent. I have been sprinkling this product on all of the scrapes I have found near my hunting stands. This product last 3-5 days and keeps the area hot for deer activity. It seems like everytime I sprinkle this on a scrape, that night or only a day later, I have buck pictures. They are definetly curious as to what the smell it and I even sprinkle some on the lick branch above the scrape. The bucks will raise up to smell it as you will see in one of the photos.

Okay..the wait is over, I am going to post some of our buck photos. There are going to be a few since its been a while since my last post. Just take you time and check them out.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; I haven't seen a deer the last 3 times I have been out. Now, there has been plenty of squirrels, chipmunks, etc. but now deer.

I have to think that with the weather turning alittle colder, the deer will start to move and I should begin to see some action. I have located several scrapes throughout the area and several buck rubs so I know we are getting into the rut. I look for it to be in full force somewhere around the week of halloween. I can't wait for it to pick up.

I will keep you posted as to the results and post any new photos I receive.

Good luck on your next hunt.

http://www.howtoagedeer.com

http://www.howtoagedeerstore.com

Whitetail Deer Were Not Moving This Weekend

Well, the deer just didn't seem to be moving this weekend for my hunts. I did not see one thing all weekend, well beside the squirrels that were running around. I checked my camera photos and saw a small 4 point had been through the area last Monday evening. The same evening I decided to hunt in my 3rd ladder stand. Of course, that's how it always it right. You hunt one place and the bucks come through the other stand. Luckily, it wasn't a legal shooter but who knows what else had been through there and not walked in front of the camera. Oh well...I will keep hunting that is for sure. There are still several big bucks out there in my hunting area.

I continued to look for the doe I shot later in the evening but still didn't have any luck finding her. The temps here have been in the 70's and 80's, extremely high for this time of year and the blood trails seemed to have dried up from earlier in the day when I first started tracking her. I think the temps have affected the deer movement also as they haven't seemed to be moving alot. I am hoping for lower temps this week and weekend for my hunts.

The rut seems to be taking shape here in Pa as I have seen several buck rubs and a few scrapes. I have created a mock scrape with the new 24Seven Dominant Buck scent that I have just received. I am looking forward to rut getting started and hope to have this scrape bring the bucks right to my stand. I will keep you posted.

Best of luck on your next hunt,

http://www.howtoagedeer.com

http://www.howtoagedeerstore.com
