The question of the day is...why do we age deer?
Here is my answer. We age deer so that we can tell how to better manage our deer population. Whether we are aging deer on the hoof (live deer) or we are using a deer aging tool (harvested deer), the main reason this should be done is to better your deer population down the road. We want to eliminate the deer that aren't producing the best antlers so that they do not pass on their genes to other future bucks.
Most bucks do not reach their best rack until they have reached maximum maturity. If we harvest these bucks before they are mature we will not be passing along those genes to create bigger and better bucks. That is why it is important to age deer on the hoof or live because we want to manage our deer population and pass along good genes for nice racks and eliminate the others.
You want to let those young bucks with good looking antlers walk by for another day so that they can pass along these genes to future births and let them mature a few years so they can reach their maximum antlers potential.
