I Took A Video of 4 Bucks Last Night!
So, I decided to borrow my parents video camera and see if I could get some deer on tape. Thursday evening around 6:45pm I decided to head to the field and get an early evening seat to see if any deer would come out to eat.
I started to walk up the middle of the field as I was going to get a spot behind the many bales of hay I have in the field. As I started out, I was thinking maybe I should walk the edge of the woods just because as I get closer, there is a slight dip in the land where I wouldn't be able to see if I continued to walk the middle of the field. So, I switched to the edge of the woods.
I traveled to my old spot where I had my ladder stand and I scanned the field with my binoculars. Nothing in the field. I picked out the bale of hay I was going to position myself behind and started heading towards it. As I started to walk, I noticed a tail. I stopped suddenly and went right to the binoculars. I spotted the deer and waited for it to lift its head. A buck, not only a buck but a nice big buck! Nice! I decided to get behind the nearest bale of hay. I tried to film the buck at first without a tripod or stand and I couldn't hold the camera steady as I was shaking so much from just seeing this nice buck. I then needed to place the video camera on top of the hay bale. This allowed me to steady the camera a bit and get a good shot. I looked at the deer and noticed another deer eating next to him. I put the video camera on this deer and sure enough... it was a buck too!
Okay, two bucks now eating in the field together. The bucks are still in the bachelor groups right now. I videod these two bucks for a little while and the wider buck decided to walk right towards me. It walked within 15 yards of me and the bale of hay and went into the woods. The second buck followed and entered the woods close behind the first buck.
Needless to say, I was excited!!
So, now what. I decided to get behind a hay bale in the center of the field. There, I could see both ends of the field where I believed the deer would enter the field. It was now 7:00pm and I sat for about 10 minutes with no action. And then...I saw him!
I saw the double drop tine buck that I had pictures of from my deer camera. You know the nice atypical buck. If you haven't seen the pictures yet, check them out.
I quickly swung the video camera on this buck. The problem was I was shaking so much I couldn't hold it still. I had to get behind the hay bale and help steady the camera. But... I couldn't move because another deer had entered the field with him and it was staring right in my direction. I had to wait! I waited and waited but then I was able to drop to the ground and slowly crawl behind the hay bale.
Now, I am there, behind the hay bale and I was able to position the camera on top of the hay bale and get a video of this great looking buck. There it was, the drop tine buck(that's what I call it now). I watched and filmed this buck for about 5 minutes I think. It slowly ate in the field and then it decided to go back into the woods. There it was and now it was gone but... I had it on tape.
So, now I am trying to figure out how to get the Hi8 tape transferred over to my computer so I can put together a nice video for all of my subscribers to see.
What an experience! Oh, and I forgot to mention the other deer that entered the field with the drop tine buck was a small two or four point, it was kinda hard to tell. So, 4 bucks in the same field in one night, all on video tape. WOWWW!
I really can't wait until opening day of archery season now! I have atleast 3 nice bucks all moving through my hunting area.
So...I will post if I see these bucks again or if I get anymore pictures from my cameras.
I hope you enjoyed this story about how I was able to video tape 4 bucks in one night.
Best of luck on you next hunt,
