Turkey season is over and I am still hunting...

Okay, well turkey season has ended and I was unsuccessful in my attempts to harvest a Tom. I can't feel bad though. I did see turkeys, not as many as I did last year but I didn't get a chance to be in the woods as much as I did last year either. So, it would have been nice to get one but I would have to say that I enjoyed just being in the woods.

My dad and I are working on a food plot back on my land so I will keep you updated as to how it is coming along. We planted a couple of apple trees out there to help bring the deer into the fields alittle bit more. We'll have to wait and see how it comes along. I am excited about the food plot and the new stuff we are planning for this upcoming hunting season. I want to bring more deer into our area and give those bucks some nutrition to grow their antlers.

I also want to remind you that if you haven't gotten a chance to get your own deer aging tool, you can check it out on my website. It is a valuable tool for aging deer and will come in handy if you are trying to manage your own deer population. Aging deer is important and often over looked by many people. Also, some people are just curious as to how old their deer are when they are harvested so they order one just to have for themselves. So, if you get a chance, head over to http://www.howtoagedeer.com to see why it is important to get your own deer aging tool.

Keep After Those Turkeys

I am still after that Tom. I have been out several times and have had the turkeys in my area but I have been unable to get them to come to me. I believe there are to many hens mixed in with the Toms and I can't get them to leave the hens when they come down. I did set up one morning in a field around 9:00am and started to call. 10 minutes later, 2 red heads came bobbing over the hill. I thought great, I can get a shot at one of these. But, before they got close enough to me, they got nervous and decided to head the opposite direction. I never did see the beards on them due to the high field but I believe they were just jakes. Of course at this point, I would take a jake. I will keep trying. Time is winding down though.

Here is a photo I took on my deer camera of some turkeys heading into the field.

Keep on hunting!

I was out Turkey Hunting this week

I went out turkey hunting on Tuesday morning. Alarm went off bright and early and there I went, out into the woods. I stood and listened for awhile to hear the gobblers. I only heard one so I decided to get close. I thought he might be in the field so I made my way through the woods to the field. I set up on the edge of the field with my decoys and started calling. Nothing. No gobbling, nothing. That tom was gobbling earlier and then nothing. It seems to me that as soon as they hit the ground, they shut up. So, I wandered back through the woods to my house, calling it a day.

Thursday night I decided to do alittle scouting for yet another turkey hunt Friday morning. I sat out on the edge of this field for an hour and a half. Saw two doe playing with me because they didn't know what I was. I took my camera along and got some video I will have to add to the site. I was just sitting there when I turned to my right and there it was a turkey coming into the field. I watched this turkey through my video camera screen as it made its way across the field. It went along way across the field and then into the edge of the woods beside a big tree stand. Wouldn't you know it, it was a gobbler. Nice tom good looking beard. I knew just where I would be going in the morning.

Friday morning, I get up all excited, can't wait to get out there. I knew where the one tom was so I headed straight for that spot. I decide to set up and take my seat. I sit down and forgot to take my hat off, you know orange hat. I stand back up to place my hat on a tree branch and wham!! A turkey goes flying away from me right out of a wood pile. This turkey didn't even roost in a tree. I didn't even know that they did that. It scared me to death. So, was that the tom I had seen the night before. Great, I might be in for a long morning. I waited and by now it was only 5:50am. I heard a gobble, oh good I thought, there is still one close by. It didn't seem to be that far away. Should I move closer or try to call it in. I decided to stay put and try to call it in. I sat there calling, more gobblers began to answer. I would guess 3 or 4 different gobblers would answer. I thought I would have a great chance at a bird today. I continued to call every once in a while to let them know I was here. The birds were still on the roost. I heard a hen calling just to my south and the gobblers would answer it. I waited and waited. Nothing. I heard one gobble as soon as those toms hit the ground and then nothing. Nothing. I don't get it. They must be with other hens because they are not gobbling at all. They weren't even interested in me. So that's my turkey story for the week. I came up empty again but it wasn't for a lack of trying. I will keep trying and see what happens.

Good luck on your next hunt!

Not Many Turkeys Gobbling for us!

Boy, was I excited for turkey season. I have been seeing turkeys for a few weeks and even scouted a few nights to locate those birds. I had a gobbler come walking up to me one night when I was scouting and it even gobbled right in front of me. It was exciting. I pulled out my phone to get a video of it but the video is to large to send to my email, so if I figure out how to get it off my phone I will post it for all to see.

The opening day of Turkey season was last Saturday. Yes, I was out there looking for those gobblers. My dad, brother, and I all set out to find those birds. We walked out to the field and waited until light to use our crow calls. We did hear 2 gobblers but they were really far away. So, we decided to set out after one of them. We kept calling as we closed the distance on that bird. We decided to set up and call the bird to us. Well, we called for awhile but nothing came. So, we decided to walk out to the field and see what was happening out there. This field was where I have been seeing the turkeys out eating during the day. We walked along the edge of the woods and saw a turkey out in the field. We put the binoculars on it but it was only a hen. After seeing the hen, we decided to set up and see if we could call some turkeys to us, thinking that maybe some more turkeys were in the dip that we couldn't see. We called but nothing came. So, opening day turkey season did not bring us the turkeys that I was expecting.

I will be out a few days this week and on Saturday, trying to harvest that gobbler. I know they are out there because I have seen them.

One exciting thing did happen when we were in the woods. My dad found an antler shed. This shed is a 5 point buck with a huge base. It is nice. I would have liked to see this big boy coming through the woods during hunting season. Atleast we know he made it through the season and hopefully will be back in my hunting area next season. Here are a few pictures of it.

I think the weather played a big part in the turkeys not gobbling. It was rainy and cloudy and I think the turkeys just shut up due to the weather.

I will keep you posted as to my attempts to harvest that gobbler this week. Best of luck on your next hunts.
