Not Many Turkeys Gobbling for us!

Boy, was I excited for turkey season. I have been seeing turkeys for a few weeks and even scouted a few nights to locate those birds. I had a gobbler come walking up to me one night when I was scouting and it even gobbled right in front of me. It was exciting. I pulled out my phone to get a video of it but the video is to large to send to my email, so if I figure out how to get it off my phone I will post it for all to see.

The opening day of Turkey season was last Saturday. Yes, I was out there looking for those gobblers. My dad, brother, and I all set out to find those birds. We walked out to the field and waited until light to use our crow calls. We did hear 2 gobblers but they were really far away. So, we decided to set out after one of them. We kept calling as we closed the distance on that bird. We decided to set up and call the bird to us. Well, we called for awhile but nothing came. So, we decided to walk out to the field and see what was happening out there. This field was where I have been seeing the turkeys out eating during the day. We walked along the edge of the woods and saw a turkey out in the field. We put the binoculars on it but it was only a hen. After seeing the hen, we decided to set up and see if we could call some turkeys to us, thinking that maybe some more turkeys were in the dip that we couldn't see. We called but nothing came. So, opening day turkey season did not bring us the turkeys that I was expecting.

I will be out a few days this week and on Saturday, trying to harvest that gobbler. I know they are out there because I have seen them.

One exciting thing did happen when we were in the woods. My dad found an antler shed. This shed is a 5 point buck with a huge base. It is nice. I would have liked to see this big boy coming through the woods during hunting season. Atleast we know he made it through the season and hopefully will be back in my hunting area next season. Here are a few pictures of it.

I think the weather played a big part in the turkeys not gobbling. It was rainy and cloudy and I think the turkeys just shut up due to the weather.

I will keep you posted as to my attempts to harvest that gobbler this week. Best of luck on your next hunts.

One Happy Hunter,
